WWDC Preview Part 3: iPod Touch, Other iDevices, One More Thing?

With time before today's WWDC Keynote growing short and breaking rumors of Steve Jobs' presence at the Moscone Center sending the grapevine into a frenzy, let's take a quick look at some of the less certain, but no less exciting, possibilities that we might see emerge into the light of day this morning (PDT)/afternoon (EDT) in San Francisco: new iPod Touch model(s), other iDevices ("iTablet"?!), and the ever-present potential for a completely unanticipated "One More Thing" -- potential that has just received a huge injection of probability if the Steve Jobs sightings at Moscone are what they appear to be.

WWDC 2009 Preview Part 2: iPhone OS 3.0 & Snow Leopard

With the WWDC 2009 Keynote event nearly upon us, let's taking a quick look at what we can expect from Apple's next-generation operating systems: iPhone OS 3.0 and Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Although we've known for some time now that we'll only see a 'Final Beta' of Snow Leopard this week, expectations for iPhone OS are somewhat less certain. In both cases, we anticipate a few surprises....the real question is how big they'll be.

WWDC Preview Part 1: 2009 iPhones

This first in a series of previews of what we and the rumor-mill at large are expecting from next week's Apple World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) focuses on the 2009 iPhones: yes, iPhones, multiple.

Other iDevices may wait, 2009 iPhone will be announced at WWDC

There has been some debate in recent days as to whether all four (or more!) 2009 iDevices which have been hinted at with multiple references in the code of iPhone OS 3.0 as well as countless published rumor-mongering reports and our own conversations with sources, will actually be announced -- no less ship -- at the World Wide Developer Conference next month. There is plenty of room for debate on the larger question, but when it comes to at least two distinct 2009 iPhone models ($99 8GB entry-level and $199/$299 16/32GB high-end models?), Rumors is very confident that we'll be seeing them during the keynote address on June 8th.

iPod Touch, other 2009 iDevices to include video camera?

Although predictions of timing (such as whether any new hardware at all will be announced, no less released, at WWDC next month -- or perhaps only the new iPhones and/or all-new iDevices such as the "iTablet" will ship then, leaving an updated iPod Touch release to wait until later in the summer) and features have begun to diverge wildly across the grapevine, one thing appears increasingly likely based on published speculation and our own source reports: the 2009 iDevice family could feature cameras with at least 3.2 megapixel photo resolution and up to 720P HD video across the entire lineup.

Multitasking for 3rd-Party Apps?

One of the hottest topics on the grapevine this weekend has been an emerging rumor based on multiple leaks (including more than one of our own sources) regarding the ability of 3rd-party apps being able to run in the background -- rather than just displaying "background notifications" as announced for iPhone OS 3.0 this summer on all supported iDevices. New reports from our sources have shed much more light on this and how it relates to the evolution of iDevice hardware.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 build 9J56 seeded to developers with Bluetooth 3.0

Despite the previous build of Mac OS X 10.5.7 code-name "Juno" appearing nearly ready for release within days (it's now been over a week), Apple has delivered a new seed -- build 9J56 -- to developers, and it looks like a little bit of work still remains before we'll see 10.5.7 in Software Update. Changelog from Apple's seed notes follows after the jump.

Apple announces $1.33/share Q2 profit, shatters Wall Street estimates

The grapevine widely predicted that Apple, Inc. (AAPL)'s second quarter financials would "beat the Street" -- but even some of the more optimistic predictors, Rumors included, were hesitant to suggest numbers quite as enthusiastic as they believed were possible. We need not have been so conservative; sales in every area were ahead of expectations and even insiders (more than a few) have been pleasantly surprised by the performance of Mac and non-Touch iPod sales as these sectors weather a near-perfect storm in the marketplace.

Next-gen iDevice picture coming together

At the same time as developers and *ahem* "others" have been looking under the hood of Apple's developmental "iPhone 3.0b2" operating system to discover clues to what sort of next-generation devices ("iDevices" or iTouch Platform Architecture, "IPA;" call them what you will) this powerful new OS will be running on as soon as June or July....other pieces of evidence, both publicly known and in the "insider" realm, have also been coming together. We really, really like what we see coming down the pipe, and we think you will too.
