Apple appoints Levinson to Chair its Board, Disney CEO Iger as newest member

Apple announced today that it is appointing multi-industry giant Art Levinson as Chairman of the Board, and added Robert Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, as the board’s newest member.

With this move, insiders at the Executive Suite say that Apple’s corporate structure will get a big boost on both the traditional fronts and many unique new ways of moving Infinite Loop’s business forward with unparalleled strength of innovation and fresh perspectives as Levinson is known for having a foot firmly planted in both of those starkly different worlds simultaneously — and with Iger’s addition to the Board, Apple’s growing ties with Disney are cemented and that will be hugely important for the company’s next big strategic move: AppleTV. Steve Jobs passes away at 56

Steve Jobs

After a long battle with pancreatic cancer, Steve Jobs died today at the age of 56.

Apple has posted a tribute to him on their homepage, along with this message:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being.
Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

WWDC 2011 Preview

Apple has announced the time and place for their World Wide Developers Conference this year. It will be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco June 6th through June 10th.

Over 1,000 Apple engineers guide you through five exciting days of in-depth technical sessions and hands-on labs that demonstrate how to harness the incredible power of the world’s most advanced operating systems into your apps.

Apple currently lists 5 “technology tracks” that will be the theme of developer labs and sessions –

  • Application Frameworks
  • Graphics, Media, and Games
  • Developer Tools
  • Internet and Web
  • Core OS

Apple reports first quarter 2011 earnings

Like clockwork, Apple announced yet another record quarter, with $26.74 billion in revenue, and a net profit of $6 billion, a 70.5% and 77% increase compared to the same quarter last year, respectively. Apple now has $59.7 billion in cash on hand.

The company sold 4.13 million Macs, 16.24 million iPhones, 19.45 million iPods and 7.33 million iPads during the quarter, and revealed during the conference call that over 160 million iOS devices are now in customers hands. Growth in Mac sales has been faster than the overall PC market for 19 straight quarters.

Tim Cook was asked about how well the Mac App Store was doing, given that most of the top Apps tend to be written by Apple. Cook noted that there have been over 1 million downloads on the Mac App Store so far, and it’s just getting started. Read more

Apple posts “navigation software” job opportunity

Apple has posted 4 similar job opportunities over at jobs.apple.com with the following 3 things listed as “Valuable knowledge” that would be helpful for the position:

  • Deep knowledge of Computational Geometry or Graph Theory
  • Experience with Linux server-side development of distributed systems
  • Experience developing navigation software (emphasis ours)

The job title is listed as “iOS Software Engineer”, and the pitch for the job includes the phrase “build the world’s best hosted platforms at massive scale”.

Given the job description, it’s likely that Apple is planning to add navigation functionality to the iOS Maps application, or perhaps release a new Navigation App which would offer live turn by turn directions read aloud, along with the “point of view” 3D map that GPS owners are accustomed to. October 20th Apple Event preview

Steve Jobs will once again take to the stage tomorrow, Wednesday October 20th at the “Town Hall” on Apple’s Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino, California to unveil a new round of products and technology previews with his infamous headline-grabbing presentation style. What will be announced? Grapevine consensus appears to have a firm grasp of the big picture, but as to the details….

With a few notable exceptions (the small number of people working on certain projects within Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion,” internal code name ‘Barolo,’ force us to sit on details of those projects until after the Event when even if those projects aren’t mentioned during the Event, they will be known to a wider group within Infinite Loop and leaks can no longer be tied so easily to our sources), what we’ve been told by some of our oldest and most reliable contacts in Cupertino comports very closely with the grapevine’s consensus of what to expect tomorrow:

….Lion is a collection of long-standing projects, many of them held back from the Leopard and Snow Leopard development cycles because they were too ambitious and too out of sync with Apple’s priorities at the time to make the cut for those releases. Read more

Apple posts record Q3 revenue, defers some iPhone revenue until December

Apple held its Q3 2010 earnings call this afternoon, announcing its best quarter ever, even when compared to previous holiday quarters. Net income was up 78%, with revenues of $15.3 Billion compared to $9.73 Billion from the same quarter last year, with net quarterly profit of $3.25 Billion or $3.51 per diluted share.

The company reports it has sold 3.47 million Macs during the Q3 period, mostly to consumers and education partners, along with 8.4 million iPhones, 9.41 million iPods, and 3.27 million iPads.

That iPad sales figure is particularly interesting, because in the near future Apple will probably be selling more iPads than Macs per quarter, however the company does not see this as cannibalization but rather a synergy, iPad owners may end up also buying Macs just like iPod owners have done in the past. WWDC 2010 Preview

Today, Apple will present several new products to its third party developer community…and through the tremendous press scrunity — not to mention what Steve Jobs recently called (an undesirable) “nation of bloggers” (ahem) — by extension the larger world of its users, enthusiasts and curious potential ‘switchers.’

Some of them will be software, some will be hardware, but most if not all will likely manage to attract their own little cyclonic orbits of controversy.

Another record financial quarter for Apple

Apple hosted its quarterly earnings call today at 5PM EDT, announcing revenue of $13.50 billion and net profit of $3.07 billion or $3.33 per diluted share, up from $1.62 billion net profit and $1.79 per diluted share from one year ago. Gross margin was 41.7 percent, up from 39.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 58 percent of the quarter’s revenue. Apple’s CFO Peter Oppenheimer predicted that the company expects to see revenue of $13.0 billion to $13.4 billion for Q3 2010 along with earnings per share between $2.28 and $2.39.

The press release posted to the Apple website quotes Steve Jobs as saying Apple had its “best non-holiday quarter ever, with revenues up 49 percent and profits up 90 percent”. Read more

Latest Mac OS X 10.6.3 beta suggests release imminent

A new test build of Mac OS X 10.6.3 has been seeded to developers, with known issues listed as “none.” This typically means that the build is a final test seed and barring major surprises, can be expected to be released in a matter of days. Read more

Apple posts 27-inch iMac Display Firmware Update 1.0, halts iMac production?

Today Apple posted 27-inch iMac Display Firmware Update 1.0, which targets the display itself rather than the graphic hardware. The official release notes say this update is intended to fix “intermittent display flickering”, a common complaint with the new machines.

In addition to the new firmware update, Hardmac is running a story that cites unnamed sources, who claim Apple has actually stopped production of the core i5 and i7 versions of the 27″ iMac model.

Users posting in the Apple support forum say that previously ordered iMacs are still shipping.

Apple previously issued a 27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 intended to fix “image corruption or display flickering” on machines with an ATI Radeon HD 4670 or 4850 chipset. Read more

It wouldn’t be January without….

….a little fireworks, Cupertino style.

In much of the media, Apple tablet rumors–and even its quarterly financial results–are showing up even more intensely than anything the company has brought to market before. Obviously, that’s saying something. But in those same media, that sentence would more commonly have ended with something more like “the run-up to the Super Bowl.” It’s little secret to most of this site’s readers that for the Mac community, the frantic run-up to an Apple Event makes the circus of a Super Bowl look like a well-mannered sit-down for British tea and crumpets.

Apple reports record Mac, iPhone sales for Q1 2010

During Apple’s quarterly earnings call this afternoon, the company reported record Mac and iPhone sales during the fiscal 2010 first quarter, and commented a bit about problems with AT&T, and the their relationship with Google.

Compared to the same time last year, revenue is up 50% to 15.68 billion, with a net profit of $3.38 billion, up from $11.88 billion revenue and $2.26 billion net profit during Q1 2009. The company delivered $3.67 per diluted share, up from $2.50 per diluted share a year ago.

In addition, the company also reported selling 8.7 million iPhones during the quarter, a 100% increase year over year, as well as 21 million iPods, and 3.36 million Macs. Sales of the classic iPod models are down, but iPod Touch sales are up 55% compared to the same period a year ago. Read more

Apple quietly adds 3.33GHz quad-core Mac Pro to keep up with iMac, but fails to match value

Apple has, with little fanfare, added a 3.33GHz Core i7 Xeon 3500 (Bloomfield) option to its Mac Pro lineup for quad-core/single-chip models. Comments by the usual suspects in Cupertino have mirrored community speculation that this is a (weak) response to the new quad-core iMac clearly crushing the value equation of the Pro….but due to its dependence on costly Xeon-class chips, that equation has not changed.

Until Apple is willing to offer a so-called “xMac” model — a headless Pro-class computer with desktop-class Core i7 2G (Lynnfield, as in the high end iMac) chips instead of the far more costly Xeons — the Mac Pro will always be hobbled in competition for the budget-minded power user.

Such prototypes have been spotted in the past, but a variety of factors….notably Apple’s close-knit relationship with Intel which typically dictates which chips it uses even if they aren’t necessarily the absolute best choices for a given market segment….have stood in the way of actual production machines of this type. Apple announces $1.33/share Q2 profit, shatters Wall Street estimates

As nearly everyone notes right from the start when they begin to dig into the numbers that Infinite Loop has disclosed, the company’s profits — up 15% overall — have been driven primarily by strong sales & margins in the iPhone sector of its business.

That is to be expected, and will continue to be the case; however, in about seven weeks’ time (WWDC, June 8-12th) we are increasingly confident that more than just new iPhones & iPods will be announced. Whether the new iDevice(s) will be Apple’s answer to the netbook, the “iTablet,” or both in one device…whether they will be marketed as a Mac, given an i-Name, or one of each….these are the questions that we’ll be digging into over the coming days.
