Apple reports record Mac, iPhone sales for Q1 2010

During Apple’s quarterly earnings call this afternoon, the company reported record Mac and iPhone sales during the fiscal 2010 first quarter, and commented a bit about problems with AT&T, and the their relationship with Google.

Compared to the same time last year, revenue is up 50% to 15.68 billion, with a net profit of $3.38 billion, up from $11.88 billion revenue and $2.26 billion net profit during Q1 2009. The company delivered $3.67 per diluted share, up from $2.50 per diluted share a year ago.

In addition, the company also reported selling 8.7 million iPhones during the quarter, a 100% increase year over year, as well as 21 million iPods, and 3.36 million Macs. Sales of the classic iPod models are down, but iPod Touch sales are up 55% compared to the same period a year ago. Read more

Apple quietly adds 3.33GHz quad-core Mac Pro to keep up with iMac, but fails to match value

Apple has, with little fanfare, added a 3.33GHz Core i7 Xeon 3500 (Bloomfield) option to its Mac Pro lineup for quad-core/single-chip models. Comments by the usual suspects in Cupertino have mirrored community speculation that this is a (weak) response to the new quad-core iMac clearly crushing the value equation of the Pro….but due to its dependence on costly Xeon-class chips, that equation has not changed.

Until Apple is willing to offer a so-called “xMac” model — a headless Pro-class computer with desktop-class Core i7 2G (Lynnfield, as in the high end iMac) chips instead of the far more costly Xeons — the Mac Pro will always be hobbled in competition for the budget-minded power user.

Such prototypes have been spotted in the past, but a variety of factors….notably Apple’s close-knit relationship with Intel which typically dictates which chips it uses even if they aren’t necessarily the absolute best choices for a given market segment….have stood in the way of actual production machines of this type. What’s next for iMac and Mac Pro?

Right now, the Core i7 iMac is the king of Apple’s hill — and a growing dominant force in the market generally as its remarkable value equation becomes more widely understood, offering ~35% better performance than the i5 model (due to the lack of HyperThreading which allows two threads to run on each core, making the CPU considerably more efficient) for only $200 more. It even rivals and sometimes exceeds the performance of the Mac Pro by nature of its more advanced Lynnfield CPU which can “turbo” to higher clock speeds, up to 3.46GHz, than the Gainestown Xeon chips in the Pro when only 1 or 2 cores are active. Gaming is a perfect example of where this can be particularly beneficial. Read more

Apples tiny new server

Since its original release, the Most affordable Mac ever has found work in unexpected places; being stuffed under the seat in a car, performing as a media center, and even taking on jobs as a server platform. It is power efficient, small and easy to manage, all qualities that make it well suited for use in alternate roles.

Now Apple appears to be catering to these special use cases, today they released a new Mac Mini specifically targeted for use as a server. The new model includes a full unlimited copy of Snow Leopard Server for $999. In contrast to Apples other hardware, there is only one configuration of the Server Mini at this time; a 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, the same Geforce 9400M found in the standard Mini, and 2 – 5400rpm, 500GB hard drives as stock. iTunes 9 still not 64-bit, internally referred to as “iTunes X”

With the release of Snow Leopard only a short time ago, many of Apples internal applications, save for a few such as iTunes and Front Row, have been rewritten in Cocoa and built as 64-bit applications. The reasons for doing so range from reluctance to retrofit major new features or fix old bugs in an application due for a Cocoa overhaul, to the obvious advantages that come with 64-bit computing; access to larger amounts of memory should it ever become necessary, and new processor features only available in 64-bit mode.

While Apple is no doubt still working on porting their flagship application to 64-bit Cocoa, the release version of iTunes 9 available from the Apple Website is apparently still 32-bit only. Read more

Apple cuts iPod prices in prelude to Event

The changes include the following:

8GB iPod Touch: $189 was $229 (reduced $40)
32GB Touch: $279 was $399 ($120)
16GB Nano $149 was $199 ($50)
120GB iPod Classic (HDD): $229 was $249 ($20)

Clearly, this means that the iPod Classic is not in fact “going away” just yet as some have speculated….but don’t be so quick to dismiss that rumor completely. Numerous signs still point to Apple pushing rotational hard disk drives out of the iPod lineup, and consolidating the entire iPod family onto “true” ARM processor based iPhone OS devices. All happening sooner rather than later.

What does this mean we can expect from this Event? Is this Apple simply lowering expectations, or pointing us in a different direction entirely? Read more

September 9th Apple Event preview

From extensive reports by reliable sources, we are very confident about the broad strokes of the following anticipated announcements at tomorrow’s Apple Event in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (just down the street from Moscone, home to Macworld and WWDC):

*iTunes 9.0 with social networking features, improved App Store and numerous other small enhancements — notably the “Cocktail” feature, which bundles in extra bonus content with full-album music purchases.
*Corresponding upgrades to App Store.ipa and iTunes.ipa on iDevices, separate from the iPhone OS 3.1 upgrade which looks like it will most likely wait until near the end of the month (circa the 25th, in parallel with AT&T’s MMS rollout)
*iPod Touch “GS” with GPS and Camera
*iPod Nano with enhanced screen, major on-board software upgrades, and built-in camera
*”Death” of the HDD-based iPod Classic, though this may not be explicitly announced at the Event itself but rather allowed to happen quietly
*New content-purchase options for iTunes and iDevice users, including video rentals for iDevices and streaming of certain types of content rather than users needing to download all content to their Mac or device in order to access it. Read more

The September 9th Music event – Rumors and Expectations

September 9th, 2009

September 9th, 2009

The event will be hosted in the same location as last year, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and will begin at 10am pacific daylight time.

The company is widely expected to update its iPod line, including a new 3rd generation iPod Touch with an updated processor and more ram to match the recently unveiled iPhone 3G S. Updated models of the iPod Nano and iPod Classic are also likely. As the Shuffle was updated with a new design in March of this year, a new model is not expected, though an increase in storage capacity would be welcome.

iTunes will no doubt be receiving an update to support the new hardware, and Apple is expected to release a 64-bit version of the application for the Mac to complement the recently released Snow Leopard operating system. Read more

Will the ‘iTablet’ run iPhone OS or Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?

As “iTablet” (Macbook Touch? iPhone Cinema?) rumors have reached a fever pitch in recent days thanks to several disclosures and leaks by third parties privy to late-stage prototypes of the device, speculation has mounted as to which variant of OS X it will run — will it be an iPhone (ARM CPU, iPhone OS) or a Mac (Intel processor, OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard)?

The most difficult part of answering this question, for even the most well-informed and -connected of insiders, is that Apple has explored both possibilities and has been extensively revamping countless elements of the Snow Leopard interface to make multi-touch input more practical. One way or another, Macs will eventually adopt multi-touch displays; it’s just a matter of when and what models, at what price ranges. Read more

Reader Q&A: What are Apple prototypes like?

From time to time, we select a few reader questions to answer as best we can, and today’s comes from Kyle.

Kyle: On your site, you often mention prototypes of Apple devices. I’m kind of curious how Apple works their prototype process. What do the prototype devices look like in the semi-finished state? Do they look like pieces of hardware slapped together by a sloppy DIYer or like the polished devices that we know Apple is famous for?

First, thanks to Kyle for writing in and asking your question. We’re always happy to part the veils of the rumor-mongering process when we can, and give our readers further insight into what it’s like to have unique access & insight into the goings-on at Infinite Loop. Read more

Snow Leopard build 10A402 seeded to developers

Weighing it at twice the size — 1.3GB vs 655MB — of the previous 10A394 build (itself the first major post-WWDC seed update), Snow Leopard 10A402 has been seeded to developers via Software Update from within the beta-stage Mac OS X 10.6. As usual, Apple’s seed notes were short on details….but reader & source reports have already begun to reach our inboxes and the early reviews are very positive.

Snow Leopard build 10A402 was released with typically minimal fanfare or detail in the seed notes which read only: “This Snow Leopard Developer Preview Update is recommended for all users running the Snow Leopard Developer Preview Build 10A394 or later. This update includes general operating system fixes for stability, compatibility, and security.”

However, within minutes of the update being posted to Snow Leopard’s Software Update, reports began to flow in rapidly from developers and others who are running these latest Mac OS X 10.6 test builds — now in early beta phase following last month’s World Wide Developer Conference where the landmark 10A380 build, essentially a feature freeze and beginning of debugging in earnest, was released. What’s next for iPhone & other iDevices?

There are many new features and pieces of core hardware that we expect to see in future iDevices — some of which (iPod Touch S) could be announced in a matter of weeks, others (iTablet, higher screen resolutions, 802.11N Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, etc) which we think may reach the market early next year and the truly next-generation stuff (4G cellular network chips, dual core ARM Cortex 9 processors, even more powerful GPUs, 5-megapixel camera with 1080P HD video and so on) that almost certainly won’t be announced until mid-2010.

And that’s just a short list.

But even Apple itself doesn’t necessarily know for certain whether suppliers will hit road-map targets for the components/chipsets that will bring these capabilities to the iDevice platform….nor whether the internally-developed technologies being engineered at Infinite Loop will hit their own.
