Steve Jobs specifically addresses health rumors

As a group with several members who have dealt with serious and/or chronic illnesses including one who has had serious, extreme pancreatic surgery similar to Steve Jobs’ own procedure (his cancer may have been “treatable” but the surgery to do so is still dramatic and the details are enough to turn even tough guys a rather green shade of pale!)…..the Rumors site team has made a point not to fuel unproductive speculation about something that only Mr. Jobs himself could have genuine first-hand knowledge of and which is a highly private, personal and even painful matter. However, on Monday he broke his protracted silence on the much-speculated-upon issue and with limited commentary from our own still-healing editors, here’s the news.

On Monday, Steve Jobs personally and specifically, for the first time since long-running rumors began last year as people became concerned about his gaunt appearance and lowered public profile, addressed questions about his health in a press release meant to clear the air and focus Apple’s presence at Macworld on other matters. Mac Mini: Rumors and expectations

With its last update coming more than a year ago, the Mac community is running wild with tales of the Minis imminent death, and still others are coming up with complex scenarios in which the Mini is radically changed to fit some specific need.

First some reality, it is almost certain that Apple will introduce an updated, Nvidia MCP79 based Mini in the near future, if not at Macworld 2009 then soon after. As Apple Insider and others have noted, strings have been found in specific files in a recent build of OS X that indicate a newer Mini is in the works, the current Minis model identifier is Macmini2,1, the plist indicates that a Macmini3,1 is coming.

Lending more credibility to Apples commitment to the Mini is a phone call a fan of the machine received after firing off an email to Mac hardware engineering chief Bob Mansfield, saying to just be patient. Read more

The end of a true classic?! 23in Cinema HD Display discontinued

Apple has marked the 23-inch Cinema HD display as “discontinued” on its Store web site, leaving only a modest stock of refurbished units at $749 USD to run out before the new 24-inch LED “dock” display ships.

New displays are currently limited to the 20- and 30-inch panels, and although Apple has several impressive new LED based display products in the pipeline, none are expected to be announced until at least Macworld San Francisco in January….

…..most likely, most models won’t ship in volume or catch up with initial until at least mid-February.

Diversifying from purely desktop-computer & laptop-docking displays, the new high-end LED displays in 16:10 and 16:9 versions adhering to 720P and 1080P HDTV resolutions with sizes in excess of 42 inches(!) will be announced in at least three phases during the winter and the last of the new LED displays is expected to ship before the first day of Spring — for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, at least. Next generation iPhone(s) to be dynamically clocked?

Currently, the hardware within your iPhone 3G or brand new iPod Touch isn’t terribly different from that contained in the very first hand-held iDevices…..

An ARM11-class processor clocked at about 400MHz (412MHz since the 1.1 update on the first generation devices) but rated at 667MHz.

128 megabytes of SDRAM.

A unique graphics acceleration chip which performs quite admirably at rendering OpenGL ES with the hand-held iDevices’ fixed resolution of 480×360, and has managed to make those handhelds the kings of the proverbial portable gaming performance hill.

Embarrassing Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS quite utterly.

Soon, those strengths with all take a step forward and the entry level will retain all of the existing ones while the high end extends them to unreal new heights. Read more

First we drill down, start small….

….but fear not, the big picture and the big surprises, capital new shovelfuls of the hottest dirt that has sat under embargo or deliberate neglect over the past two months (that itself being one of the “big picture” things we’ll be getting to in the next week or so as we spin up this site’s engines properly) will be coming to you soon enough.

For now, read on to the full article for our first shotgun-blast of details and tidbits that found themselves at the top of our lists as we emerge from the proverbial Bat Cave with our old friends the Bothans and the old-school sources collectively known as the “Drunken Infinite Loop Dwellers Anonymous” (D.I.L.D.A.)…..you ain’t seen nothin’ yet and here’s a (small) taste of what’s to come. iPhone Software Update 2.0.2 Released

Late Tuesday evening, Apple released version 2.0.2, a relatively modest update officially containing only bug fixes but unofficially including a number of non-bugfix tweaks to several major components of the onboard operating system as well as its bundled applications in at least three confirmed instances — Settings, Mail and Safari.

Stay tuned for a full “0-day” hands on review from Rumormongers’ Labs to be followed by Reader Reports from our best sources across the globe…..for now, some early vital stats on iPhone 2.0.2 which represents a “quick” release of key functional & security changes which couldn’t wait for the massive and impressive 2.1 release due in roughly two to three weeks’ time….

Although a parallel release for the iPod Touch is expected shortly including all non-phone & non-mobile-data/non-GPS related code — primarily security fixes in the core software, Settings, Mail and Mobile Safari — the releases for the two devices are expected to be synchronous for version 2.1 which will be a fully free update for both devices, provided you are already running the version 2.x.x software package. Update to Infinite Loop Bldg. 6 fire news…..

According to sources who returned to the scene of the fire after having left overnight shifts or other late-night work at the company the previous evening….construction to add physical networking & other datacenter/office infrastructure had been installing air conditioning units to offset heat produced by the fast growing server iron located in that part of Building 6’s IS/IT/Networking division offices had been underway for several days prior to the incident which apparently sparked the fire.

Reportedly welding operations being done to support the heavyweight air conditioning hardware and ductwork somehow resulted in a fast-growing fire which escaped notice until it was too late for the welders or other construction personnel to put out directly.

Stay tuned for further developments as reports come in, and for a resumption of normal daily updates with some really hot dirt coming your way shortly….. Read more

BREAKING NEWS: 3-Alarm fire damages Apple HQ in Cupertino

According to the latest reports which we will continue to bring you as developments are relayed to us by long-time sources who have been on the scene through the whole ordeal, a building separate from Infinite Loop’s central structures which currently houses much of the company’s IT/server/networking team — the people who bring us Apple’s web sites, downloads, Software Updates and other services both internal and external in its vast corporate network — suffered a serious fire and considerable damage early Wednesday Pacific Time.

Over $2 Million US Dollars in damage is believed to have been done, possibly including physical items and/or data which is considered either irreplaceable or only able to be reconstructed at considerable effort — in some cases, according to our sources, solutions to Apple’s internal networking problems and an emerging package of solutions for Apple’s severely strained Retail Store network (forcing some stores’ managers to pay out of local funds for business-class broadband to take strain off their anemic corporate-provided connections which are even now usually painfully slow due to the traffic overload) which could cost far more than the physical damage might suggest to restore and actually begin implementing for future product roll-outs so there are no repeats of the “iPhone 3G roll-out snafu”….. AT&T, Apple scramble to keep up with heavy consumer demand

On July 11th, when the new iPhone 3G hit Apple and AT&T store shelves across America, one million units were sold in the first weekend alone.

If conditions all around Maine and other parts of New England are any indicator of what’s happening across the nation….

For every happy new iPhone user, there are at least a few dozen others left out in the cold, still waiting for their new equipment.

At the Maine Mall AT&T store location in South Portland, Maine, a line stretched out dozens deep at six a.m. on July 11th.

Any customer wandering in on their lunch break with the hope of scoring a new iPhone was disappointed at best to be turned away with the hopeful promise of another delivery for the next morning. Read more

Get ready for the iPhone 3G tidal rush….

Apple stores are preparing for the feeding frenzy Friday morning as the new iPhone 3G hits the shelves all across the country. Last summer the first generation sold out of stock the very first weekend; has Apple prepared better for this new release?

If you are determined to catch this first wave and not chance the iPhone 3G selling out before you can get one, you may wish to park yourself outside the Apple stores the night before and wait for the doors to open like an eager concert fanatic camped out on the sidewalk, waiting for the tickets to go on sale for their favorite band’s next show.

If lines aren’t your thing, or if you are just too busy or cool to wait in such a fashion, you could give the AT&T stores a try, where lines are likely to be much shorter with more locations to spread the business between. Read more

More than ‘just a phone,’ iPhone 3G is open to third-party software

Apple launched it’s iPhone App Store this morning, a full 24 hours ahead of the release of the new iPhone 3G.

What’s more, Apple has opened the door to third party software with a software developers kit. There is sure to be much competition among developers to come up with better and more popular applications, which will be available to consumers online through Apple’s iPhone App store.

Sources report that 25% or the first 500 applications will be free, and about a third or so are expected to be games (good news for lucky commuters, kids, and kids at heart everywhere). Of the commercial applications, about 90% are expected to be $9.99 or less (more good news for those on a budget!). Read more
