Update to Infinite Loop Bldg. 6 fire news…..

According to sources who returned to the scene of the fire after having left overnight shifts or other late-night work at the company the previous evening….construction to add physical networking & other datacenter/office infrastructure had been installing air conditioning units to offset heat produced by the fast growing server iron located in that part of Building 6’s IS/IT/Networking division offices had been underway for several days prior to the incident which apparently sparked the fire.

Reportedly welding operations being done to support the heavyweight air conditioning hardware and ductwork somehow resulted in a fast-growing fire which escaped notice until it was too late for the welders or other construction personnel to put out directly.

Stay tuned for further developments as reports come in, and for a resumption of normal daily updates with some really hot dirt coming your way shortly….. Read more

AT&T, Apple scramble to keep up with heavy consumer demand

On July 11th, when the new iPhone 3G hit Apple and AT&T store shelves across America, one million units were sold in the first weekend alone.

If conditions all around Maine and other parts of New England are any indicator of what’s happening across the nation….

For every happy new iPhone user, there are at least a few dozen others left out in the cold, still waiting for their new equipment.

At the Maine Mall AT&T store location in South Portland, Maine, a line stretched out dozens deep at six a.m. on July 11th.

Any customer wandering in on their lunch break with the hope of scoring a new iPhone was disappointed at best to be turned away with the hopeful promise of another delivery for the next morning. Read more

Get ready for the iPhone 3G tidal rush….

Apple stores are preparing for the feeding frenzy Friday morning as the new iPhone 3G hits the shelves all across the country. Last summer the first generation sold out of stock the very first weekend; has Apple prepared better for this new release?

If you are determined to catch this first wave and not chance the iPhone 3G selling out before you can get one, you may wish to park yourself outside the Apple stores the night before and wait for the doors to open like an eager concert fanatic camped out on the sidewalk, waiting for the tickets to go on sale for their favorite band’s next show.

If lines aren’t your thing, or if you are just too busy or cool to wait in such a fashion, you could give the AT&T stores a try, where lines are likely to be much shorter with more locations to spread the business between. Read more

Does the huge MacBook Air price drop suggest an imminent revision?

Apple is becoming better known for tooting it’s own horn, especially where price point/performance improvements are concerned. Yet, the recent drop of $500 off the price of the high-end MacBook Air ($400 less for the SSD drive and $100 for the 1.8GHz CPU) breaks with that pattern; no press releases or fanfare of any sort. Why?

Popular speculation is that a newer, faster, better Air may be just around the corner.

Lack of attention to the price drop may indicate a wish on Apple’s part to sell off the older models faster, if not in larger volume….then perhaps in order to clear space for the new MacBook Air.

Such a price drop could facilitate an early clear out of the old models to make room for the new models in time to avoid an even bigger price drop down the road. Read more

Apple posts hidden link to iPhone 2.0 software!

If you would like to be one of the few to sneak in behind an unpublished link and download the iPhone 2.0 firmware a day early, you need merely click here! (225MB)

To use the package once it has been downloaded (using the command-line curl or ftp utils, or another downloading application which won’t auto-expand the file after download, is recommended), simply option-click on the “Check for Update” button in iTunes, and select the file.

The update will wipe all data from your phone, so it is wise to ensure that all your bookmarks et cetera are backed up. It is not generally possible to specifically backup/restore your Home Screen icons, so be prepared to start from scratch in that regard. Read more

Apple introduces new iMacs clocked at up to 3.06GHz(!)

Although this announcement comes as no surprise to many on the grapevine who have been reporting on it regularly over the past several weeks while most of the Rumors staff was on leave or sabbatical….many in the community expressed great enthusiasm for the new machines which form the backbone of Apple’s family of Macs.

The new iMacs sport an enclosure and display panels (20in 1680×1050 and 24in 1920×1200) which look on the surface, as well as on paper, identical to the previous generation but according to some of our oldest and most reliable sources at the highest levels within Cupertino’s Mac Hardware engineering division.

There is a lot more going on here than meets the eye in this latest update, even if you dig deep into Apple’s published specs so far. Read more

Apple announces new Macbooks, Macbook Pros

As recently predicted by Rumors, Apple has updated the remainder of its laptop line-up following last month’s introduction of the Macbook Air.

Sporting powerful “Penryn” 45-nanometer mobile Core 2 Duo processors from 2.1 to 2.6GHz, these new laptops are poised to crush the competition and expand Apple’s market share considerably. Read on for specs, analysis and more details!

Both the Macbooks and MBP’s have received significant enclosure/industrial design tweaks — notably, both sport the same “modern raised-button” keyboard design as the Macbook Air and Apple’s latest stand-alone ‘board.

Most of the new laptops are build around the “standard” Penryn chip, running at 2.1-2.4GHz with 3MB of enhanced on-chip cache memory; as Rumors reported previously in this article about Penryn & future Macbook Air specs, this new cache is faster and more intelligent than previous Merom/Santa Rosa based designs which included 4MB of cache. Apple announces best quarterly financials ever!

Apple has posted a $1.58 billion profit on revenues of 9.6 billion and setting all-time company records in virtually every measure of success from strong product sales — both Macs and iDevices — to the substantial margin by which the results beat Wall Street Estimates.

Unfortunately, due a combination of several factors including the looming general recession, shares of AAPL dropped nearly 4% on the day and more than 10% in after-hours trading; all told, Wednesday’s price drop was $16.57(!), bringing AAPL to 139.07 at the close of trading — this down from the previous month’s high of approximately $200 a share. Apple website hints “Something in the Air”…..

Although we have been skeptical up to this point about certain leaks (the Wikipedia posting of what was claimed to be Steve Jobs’ notes for the address being only the most prominent of dozens) that hit the Web yesterday, it seems that the part about an emphasis on wireless innovation and a nearly cable-free Macbook were closer to the mark than many on the grapevine had initially thought.

“Macbook Air” may indeed be the name for the long-rumored “Macbook Thin/Mini/Nano”….but there are still a great many unanswered questions about how this new Mac will fit into the product lineup, and whether the “Air” marketing will be exclusive to that product or part of a more general campaign on Apple’s part to reduce cable clutter & increase wireless adoption…..Stay tuned to Rumors for more live coverage from the Keynote, the Expo floor, and “undisclosed locations” around Cupertino where our reporters will have their yearly meetings with sources while the executives are off in San Francisco otherwise occupied….it’s going to be a heck of a ride! Q3 Financials

Of greatest interest to most Mac fans will be the iPhone, though with iPhone released just before the close of their third quarter July 1st we will get but a small glimpse of potential sales and revenues from our favorite new iDevice.

With all the flurry of attention to details both large & small surrounding the iPhone, it would be easy to forget the upgraded MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio both released last quarter. All three are worthy additions to the Apple family that should help Apple continue its steady growth in recent months.

With this year’s second quarter outdoing last year’s counterpart by an 88% growth rate, we can only hope the numbers are indicative of future growth. Last quarter Apple saw a gross of $5.25 billion, netting $770 million in profit. Read more
