Next generation iPhone(s) to be dynamically clocked?

Currently, the hardware within your iPhone 3G or brand new iPod Touch isn’t terribly different from that contained in the very first hand-held iDevices…..

An ARM11-class processor clocked at about 400MHz (412MHz since the 1.1 update on the first generation devices) but rated at 667MHz.

128 megabytes of SDRAM.

A unique graphics acceleration chip which performs quite admirably at rendering OpenGL ES with the hand-held iDevices’ fixed resolution of 480×360, and has managed to make those handhelds the kings of the proverbial portable gaming performance hill.

Embarrassing Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS quite utterly.

Soon, those strengths with all take a step forward and the entry level will retain all of the existing ones while the high end extends them to unreal new heights. Read more

First we drill down, start small….

….but fear not, the big picture and the big surprises, capital new shovelfuls of the hottest dirt that has sat under embargo or deliberate neglect over the past two months (that itself being one of the “big picture” things we’ll be getting to in the next week or so as we spin up this site’s engines properly) will be coming to you soon enough.

For now, read on to the full article for our first shotgun-blast of details and tidbits that found themselves at the top of our lists as we emerge from the proverbial Bat Cave with our old friends the Bothans and the old-school sources collectively known as the “Drunken Infinite Loop Dwellers Anonymous” (D.I.L.D.A.)…..you ain’t seen nothin’ yet and here’s a (small) taste of what’s to come. iPhone Software Update 2.0.2 Released

Late Tuesday evening, Apple released version 2.0.2, a relatively modest update officially containing only bug fixes but unofficially including a number of non-bugfix tweaks to several major components of the onboard operating system as well as its bundled applications in at least three confirmed instances — Settings, Mail and Safari.

Stay tuned for a full “0-day” hands on review from Rumormongers’ Labs to be followed by Reader Reports from our best sources across the globe…..for now, some early vital stats on iPhone 2.0.2 which represents a “quick” release of key functional & security changes which couldn’t wait for the massive and impressive 2.1 release due in roughly two to three weeks’ time….

Although a parallel release for the iPod Touch is expected shortly including all non-phone & non-mobile-data/non-GPS related code — primarily security fixes in the core software, Settings, Mail and Mobile Safari — the releases for the two devices are expected to be synchronous for version 2.1 which will be a fully free update for both devices, provided you are already running the version 2.x.x software package. AT&T, Apple scramble to keep up with heavy consumer demand

On July 11th, when the new iPhone 3G hit Apple and AT&T store shelves across America, one million units were sold in the first weekend alone.

If conditions all around Maine and other parts of New England are any indicator of what’s happening across the nation….

For every happy new iPhone user, there are at least a few dozen others left out in the cold, still waiting for their new equipment.

At the Maine Mall AT&T store location in South Portland, Maine, a line stretched out dozens deep at six a.m. on July 11th.

Any customer wandering in on their lunch break with the hope of scoring a new iPhone was disappointed at best to be turned away with the hopeful promise of another delivery for the next morning. Read more

More than ‘just a phone,’ iPhone 3G is open to third-party software

Apple launched it’s iPhone App Store this morning, a full 24 hours ahead of the release of the new iPhone 3G.

What’s more, Apple has opened the door to third party software with a software developers kit. There is sure to be much competition among developers to come up with better and more popular applications, which will be available to consumers online through Apple’s iPhone App store.

Sources report that 25% or the first 500 applications will be free, and about a third or so are expected to be games (good news for lucky commuters, kids, and kids at heart everywhere). Of the commercial applications, about 90% are expected to be $9.99 or less (more good news for those on a budget!). Read more

Apple posts hidden link to iPhone 2.0 software!

If you would like to be one of the few to sneak in behind an unpublished link and download the iPhone 2.0 firmware a day early, you need merely click here! (225MB)

To use the package once it has been downloaded (using the command-line curl or ftp utils, or another downloading application which won’t auto-expand the file after download, is recommended), simply option-click on the “Check for Update” button in iTunes, and select the file.

The update will wipe all data from your phone, so it is wise to ensure that all your bookmarks et cetera are backed up. It is not generally possible to specifically backup/restore your Home Screen icons, so be prepared to start from scratch in that regard. Read more

Apple is not dropping Carbon support, PowerPC code

Since the Intel switch, everyone has been waiting for Apple to set a hard deadline for support for PowerPC based Macs. Some have significant numbers of PowerPC machines in use and want to be able to continue using them with new OS X releases in the future, others are clamoring for Apple to go Intel-only.

While it is a given that Apple will eventually drop support for the last PowerPC based macs at some point with a future release of OS X, it is unlikely this will happen as soon as 10.6. Apple does set arbitrary but hard cutoff points for older hardware, but those are specific machines lacking certain features. For Apple to cut support for PowerPC hardware would mean cutting an entire architecture out of the operating system. Read more

Logic Express 8.0.2 update follows Pro version

Despite escaping the notice of many readers who are distracted by show-stopper updates like OS X 10.5.3, Server Admin Tools 10.5.3, Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.1, et cetera….Apple has indeed released the 8.0.2 update to Logic Express that Express users have been waiting for since the Pro version was released earlier in the week.

The update weighs in at 73.7MB, and its release notes provide essentially no information on what the changes are — but given the size of the update, they are clearly significant.

When queried about the dearth of details on the two recent Logic updates, reliable sources in Cupertino explained that the changes are almost entirely bug fixes and were not entirely detailed for several reasons.

Chief among these, apparently, is concern among high ranking executives working under the VP of Software that several of the changes would be embarrassing to the company and that at least one might violate an NDA which Apple has signed with a third party. Read more

Apple releases 10.5.3, Security Updates

Mac OS X 10.5.3, a massive update weighing in at well over 400MB and containing even more changes than 10.5.2 (itself sporting the largest changelist in Apple software update history) has been released along with a separate package for Tiger users containing only the relevant security updates.

Coming almost exactly when predicted by the grapevine, 10.5.3 and these Tiger Security Updates are packed to the gills with fixes and new functionality that many readers have been clamoring for since before Leopard had even shipped….

From the 10.5.3 release notes (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1141):

General

*Fixes a font issue that could result in Helvetica Narrow being used in applications instead of Helvetica.

*Addresses an issue with stuttering video and audio playback in certain USB devices. Read more

Apple seeds 10.5.2 build 9C23; massive 500MB

Following our recent report on the “Mac Pro build” of OS X Leopard, 9C16 and recent seeds of 10.5.2, Apple has posted a new seed for third party developers to evaluate, 9C23. The already extremely lengthy changelist and fast-growing update package is now over well into the hundreds of megabytes and could eventually exceed 400MB(!), making it the single largest point update to OS X ever.

Depending on whether one is updating a PowerPC or Intel Mac, packages could vary from 250 to upwards of 400MB in size, and some on the grapevine believe its final weigh-in could be very close to five hundred megabytes.

Either way, it will be a huge download and there has been a lot of debate at Infinite Loop, according to reliable sources, as to whether the update should be split into multiple packages (the core system update, and individual updates to applications or components), hold back some changes for Security Updates that will follow shortly after the point upgrade…..or a more unusual solution, such as offering the update with a nominal pricetag of a few dollars on a CD-ROM disk for purchase at the Apple Store, to ease the burden on modem users or others for whom such a massive download is impractical. Apple quietly seeds Mac OS X 10.5.2 build 9C16 (“Mac Pro build”)

During Macworld San Francisco, the Leopard development team — shifting its focus from the sprinter’s work of getting 10.5.0 the first point-update out the door to the marathon-runner’s slow and steady work of point update development, bug fixes and supporting both hardware and software engineers from various projects across the Infinite Loop campus in ensuring their products play nice with Leopard — quietly seeded the first major build of 10.5.2, 9C16.

Some readers who have become early adopters of the new “Harpertown” based Mac Pro may recognize this version as the very build which shipped with their machines, though it remains versioned 10.5.1 on those systems. 9C16 is far more than just a collection of Mac Pro-specific support files, however; as a matter of fact, it already sports one of the longest changelogs we’ve seen associated with an initial point-update build in recent memory….. The iPhone SDK, Hackers, and Malware

Back when the iPhone was officially released in June of 2007, Apple had already made their position on 3rd party applications quite clear, users would never be permitted to install software on the device themselves. Apple releases firmware in an encrypted form to prevent tampering and to protect iTunes purchases, making modification or installation of new apps difficult at best. Apples solution for these 3rd party developers was to treat the iPhone as a web platform, with Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, or “AJAX” providing the needed functionality for anything developers or users would want to use on the phone in the future. Apple expected these AJAX applications to provide users with applications that would have a native look and feel, while still running in the relative protection of the Safari web browser. Read more
