Note: Our apologies for the inaccurate title/url, we assumed they would do a release today and didn’t catch the title before publishing -ed

After 22 months of development, Apple has finally released the next major version of Mac OS X: 10.7 codename “Lion”.

First the availability details: new Macs will come with Lion preinstalled, but everyone else will have to get it from the Mac App Store. That’s right, no discs, no retail boxes of any kind.

We do expect them to continue making USB restore drives available to Mac buyers, and there will likely be a way to create one if needed.

Pricing is $29.99 this time around, and once bought you can install Lion on all of your App Store “Authorized” Macs. Read more

iOS 4.3 to be released March 11th

iOS 4.3

During the iPad event today, Apple announced that the iOS 4.3 update would be available March 11th to coincide with the availability of the iPad 2.

The new version includes a Personal Hotspot feature that will allow customers who subscribe to an Internet tethering plan from their carrier, to use the iPhone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. This allows other devices, such as a laptop or a Wi-Fi iPad to use the iPhone as an internet connection.

Unfortunately the new feature will only be enabled on the iPhone 4. Whether or not this is a hardware limitation or simply a product differentiation strategy, we can’t say for sure.

As we found out a few weeks ago, the new iOS update will allow iPad owners to use the physical switch on the side of their device as a rotation lock once again. Read more

First look: Full System Encryption in Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”

One of the most valuable changes in Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” is a complete overhaul of FileVault, Apple’s disk encryption system for protecting private data such as stored pictures, emails, documents and home movies.

In Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5, FileVault could only be used to encrypt the “home folder” for each user, and it was widely criticized for a number of implementation flaws and security issues.

With 10.7 “Lion”, Apple intends to solve some of these flaws and significantly enhance security and privacy by turning FileVault into a disk level encryption system, not only for the main filesystem, but also for any external drive a user wants to protect with encryption.

While Apple is not the first to implement full system encryption, anyone running 10.7 will be able to use it, compared to Windows where an Ultimate or Enterprise edition of the operating system is needed to enable Microsoft’s system encryption feature called BitLocker (Truecrypt is a free alternative). Apple schedules iPad event for March 2nd

The Loop is reporting that Apple has sent invitations out for an Apple Event next Wednesday, March 2nd:

According to the invitation received by The Loop, the event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10:00 am. This is the same venue Apple has used to introduce a number of products in recent years.

While it’s obvious that this event is primarily about the new iPad, we’re certain that Apple will also say something about the recently unveiled subscription billing policy that many developers, publishers and tech journalists feel is going to harm the iOS ecosystem in the long run.

The iPad 2 is rumored to be a performance boosting upgrade, with more RAM and a faster ARM processor, but it’s also likely they’ll bump the flash storage capacity of each model as well, with the base model starting at 32GB. Read more

First Look: How Mobile Safari supports AirPlay video streming

Though the iOS 4.3 beta news is still making the rounds on tech websites, we thought we’d go ahead and setup a simple demo of the new AirPlay support in Mobile Safari.

(Note: if you don’t have iOS 4.3 installed on both your mobile device and your Apple TV 2, you probably won’t be able to test the new feature with the video below, however you can still read along about how it works)

Previously AirPlay video streaming was only available in Apple-controlled iOS applications like the Youtube and iPod/Video Apps, however the new iOS 4.3 beta opens up AirPlay support to both 3rd party App Store applications, as well as embedded web videos using either the Quicktime plugin or the HTML5 <video> element. iOS Beta for Apple TV 2

In addition to the iOS 4.3 builds offered to iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch developers just moments ago, Apple has also seeded a new build of iOS for the Apple TV 2 hardware for the express purpose of testing AirPlay video streaming between iOS devices.

Not much else is known about what the new build contains, but expect the usual “bug fixes” etc.

Stay tuned! Read more

Apple releases iOS 4.3 beta

iOS 4.3 beta

iOS 4.3 beta

Apple has posted beta versions of iOS 4.3 to the developer portal, just one day after Verizon’s iPhone 4 event revealed that the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 was running an unreleased 4.2.5 version of iOS.

Builds are available for the iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch 3rd and 4th generation devices. Curiously, a build for the 2nd generation iPod Touch is not provided, however they may still release a public version for that model once iOS 4.3 is out of beta.

Not much is known about the new version of Apple’s mobile operating system, however rumors have been circulating since yesterday that iOS 4.3 would include the unannounced Wi-Fi internet tethering feature that Verizon demonstrated at the event yesterday. Read more

Mac App store launches with 1,000 applications

Mac App Store

Mac App Store

Apple’s Mac App store launched today alongside the release of Mac OS X 10.6.6, bringing some major iPhone and iPad applications to the Mac platform and pulling some existing Mac favorites into the new App Store.

The Mac App Store is included as part of Mac OS X 10.6.6, and is unavailable for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, which also means it is unavailable for PowerPC Macs. However, anyone with an Intel Mac should be able to run the App Store and download free or paid applications.

Steve Jobs says there are over 1,000 applications available on the Mac App Store at launch, but we’ve never been a fan of using big numbers as an indicator of quality or the availability of applications you would actually want to use. Read more

Apple posts “navigation software” job opportunity

Apple has posted 4 similar job opportunities over at jobs.apple.com with the following 3 things listed as “Valuable knowledge” that would be helpful for the position:

  • Deep knowledge of Computational Geometry or Graph Theory
  • Experience with Linux server-side development of distributed systems
  • Experience developing navigation software (emphasis ours)

The job title is listed as “iOS Software Engineer”, and the pitch for the job includes the phrase “build the world’s best hosted platforms at massive scale”.

Given the job description, it’s likely that Apple is planning to add navigation functionality to the iOS Maps application, or perhaps release a new Navigation App which would offer live turn by turn directions read aloud, along with the “point of view” 3D map that GPS owners are accustomed to. Mac App Store opening January 6th

Mac App Store

Mac App Store

Apple has issued a press release announcing January 6th will be the date the Mac App Store officially opens for business.

Developers have been submitting Mac Apps for review since early November, a process that will be familiar to iOS developers by now as the two developer programs are quite similar.

Because a new build of Mac OS X may be required to run the Mac App Store, Apple could also release Mac OS X 10.6.6 on the same day or a few days earlier. According to developers, Mac OS X 10.6.6 is a very small upgrade primarily intended to support the Mac App Store; delta upgrades from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6 have reportedly been as small as 3-4MB in size.

The Mac App Store will be available through Software Update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard users only. Read more

Apple updates AppleTV 2 software to iOS 4.2

2nd Generation AppleTV

2nd Generation AppleTV

Along with the release of iOS 4.2.1 for the rest of the iOS device lineup, Apple has updated the new AppleTV 2 device in order to support AirPlay video streaming.

While many sites reported that the new build for the AppleTV 2 was iOS 4.1, it is in fact iOS 4.2 (but NOT 4.2.1 which was a bugfix build for portables due to 4.2 being pulled after it went Gold Master earlier this month).

AirPlay video is of course the major new feature in this build. Users can now stream video from an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad running iOS 4.2.1, directly to the AppleTV 2 wirelessly. In addition, iTunes on the Mac or PC can also stream video to the AppleTV 2. Read more

iOS 4.2.1 now available on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

As we expected, Apple today released iOS 4.2.1 and brought all supported devices up to the same version of the operating system. You can upgrade by plugging in your device and checking for updates in iTunes.

The update is free for all devices that can run iOS 4, which at this point is every iOS portable device other than the first generation iPhone and iPod Touch.

For iPad owners, iOS 4.2.1 is a very significant upgrade; many of the features that other iDevice owners have been enjoying since iOS 4 was released this past summer are now available on Apple’s tablet. Game Center, folders, tv show rentals, the unified email inbox, and of course multitasking are all now available on the iPad. Read more
