Apple to launch iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion and iCloud during WWDC
Apple has announced that on June 6th, Steve Jobs will lead the WWDC keynote this year:
Absent is any mention of a new iPhone model, leading some to speculate that the event will be purely about the new software offerings and of course, developers. This would be the first time since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 that Apple altered their schedule of releasing a new iPhone model each year at WWDC.
If they do delay the release of the next iPhone model, it will likely happen sometime later this summer, possibly being pushed back to the yearly music event in September.
The press release, which is reprinted below, reveals that Apple has decided to rebrand MobileMe as “iCloud”. The new service is expected to offer cloud based music streaming of iTunes purchases and potentially the entire iTunes library stored on a personal Mac.
Apple is expected to either reduce the price or simply make the new iCloud service free to compete with similar offerings from competitors like Amazon and Google.
