Marian: you may want to check in itunes for firmware updates, my 3G nano needed the new 1.1 update before it could play rentals.

I got this same message when trying to transfer a rented movie from my MBP to a 3rd generation nano--but I thought it might be due to the fact that I forgot to turn on the Airport in the MBP, therefore causing authentication to fail.

Oh well, that's Apple for you. I'm not buying a new video iPod for rentals. So, in other words, they lose my rental money. Besides, I lose all my games if I get the new iPod "Classic".
